Alphabetic print-based test is losing prominence in the ways we communicate in the New Media Age.
In this picture, we see kites flying high above us in the clouds. This can be compared to alphabetic print-based test losing prominence. Just as the kites are still in view, so is the alphabetic print-based test. A kite it hard to reel back in and this can be said of the print-based tests. With newer technology evolving, the older things are going to be hovering above us just as a kite and even more difficult to bring back.

One thing I think is intriguing about your image and interpretation is that the image could work both ways as a metaphor--just as old texts are seen to be slipping away, some would say new media is also hard to hold on to while it constantly evolves. Though images are seen as some as a "new" form of literacy, I think of them as the original literacy. :)
ReplyDeleteI thought the picture was perfect for the quote. I agree with Michelle that you could interpret the kites flying away in different ways. Just like you, I immediately think of the old texts drifting away. I have many old books the belonged to my great & great-great-grandparents. Inside you can see where they wrote their name, the date, sometimes pressed a flower or four leaf clover inside the pages, notes scribbled in random places... You can physically touch these and trace your hand over where they once wrote. So different from reading on a kindle or other such device! The personal and physical characteristics are missing.
ReplyDeleteMichelle W. Great choice for the quote... I usually make the connection of deep in the ocean or bottomless pit... and yet there is way more up then there is any down on Earth. I like too how you chose a kite rather then some other flying / floating objects because a kite relies on the pull of the string... the dynamic struggle between images and alphabets. Looking forward to more of your posts!
ReplyDeleteMichelle, I also chose this quote! I think it is a great way to express how are society is today. We are tiptoeing into something bigger everyday. I love the image that you chose, because just as you said it is hard to reel back in, and today with the society booming with technology it is hard to ever go back to the simple things.
